Terms and Conditions

By Registering with Wandle Teaching School Hub Appropriate Body Service you are confirming that you have read and agree to all terms and conditions regarding the Appropriate Body’s charges and services offered as outlined on this website.

Two options

We have a range of Appropriate Body Services available to meet your school’s needs. While it is not compulsory, we highly recommend that schools using our ECTE training use our Full Induction Programme as this will mean seamless communication within the same Hub team for all of your ECT needs.

Appropriate Body Options

£225 per ECT per annum.

Please note that no refunds are given if the ECT leaves during year one or year two of the induction process, as we have a legal responsibility for all data for six years. For ECTs granted a reduction to their induction, schools will be charged at our standard ECT yearly rate of £225.

The school uses a lead provider, such as UCL’s full induction programme and signs up to register ECTs with the AB service – the DfE funded provider route. This service includes:

  • Access to ECT Manager through WTSH to submit progress reviews and assessments
  • Registration of ECTs with the Teacher Regulation Agency (TRA)
  • Reviewing and authorisation of progress reviews and assessment reports over two years
  • Access to the ECT Manager help desk
  • Additional support and advice for ECTs not meeting the Teacher Induction Standards, including school visits.

Wandle Teaching School Hub invoices for the yearly induction fee in the Autumn term.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the role of the Appropriate Body (AB) and statutory induction for Early Career Teachers (ECTs).

The AB has a statutory duty to ensure that ECTs receive their induction in line with national regulations. This includes:

  • Registering and monitoring all ECTs.
  • Ensuring statutory guidance is followed.
  • Checking that progress reviews and assessments are fair and consistent.
  • Quality assuring induction arrangements in schools.
  • Making the final decision on whether an ECT has successfully completed induction.

All Early Career Teachers undertaking statutory induction in England must be registered with an AB at the start of their employment in a relevant school. Schools are responsible for completing this registration.

  • The Appropriate Body oversees and quality assures statutory induction.
  • The Lead Provider/Delivery Partner delivers the Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE) training programme.

They work in partnership, but have distinct roles.

Induction is a two-year programme (full-time), or the equivalent for part-time teachers. It must be served in whole school terms and cannot normally be shortened.

Yes, but only in exceptional circumstances, such as:

  • The ECT has significant prior teaching experience.
  • The ECT makes exceptionally rapid progress against the Teachers’ Standards.

Any application must be supported by strong evidence and approved by the AB.

If an ECT is absent for 30 or more school days, the induction period is extended to ensure sufficient time is served. This includes absences due to illness, maternity/paternity leave, or other extended breaks.

Schools must:

  • Put in place a clear support plan.
  • Monitor progress closely.
  • Notify the AB at the earliest opportunity.

The AB may request evidence, offer advice, or carry out a quality assurance visit.

Schools must submit via the AB’s system (e.g. ECT Manager):

  • Progress Reviews at the end of each non-assessment term.
  • Formal Assessments at the end of Year 1 and Year 2.

The AB may visit schools if:

  • Concerns are raised about the quality of induction.
  • Progress reviews or assessments lack sufficient evidence.
  • An ECT is at risk of not meeting the Teachers’ Standards.
  • The school is delivering a school-led induction programme rather than using a funded provider-led option.

If the AB decides an ECT has not met the Teachers’ Standards, they cannot be employed as a teacher in a maintained school, academy, or free school in England. The ECT has the right to appeal.

Yes. Induction can continue in another school if:

  • The school is eligible to host induction.
  • The ECT is re-registered with an AB.
  • Records of progress are transferred to the new school.

An Induction Tutor should be:

  • An experienced teacher, usually a senior or middle leader.
  • Familiar with the Teachers’ Standards.
  • Skilled in supporting and assessing teachers.

This role is separate from the mentor, although in smaller schools they may be combined.

AB services are subject to a registration fee. This covers:

  • Monitoring and statutory decision-making.
  • Quality assurance of assessments.
  • Support and guidance for schools.

Details are published on our website.

Yes. Induction can be paused if an ECT takes extended leave (e.g. maternity, paternity, or long-term sickness). It will resume when the ECT returns.

ECTs can appeal AB decisions to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), who act on behalf of the Secretary of State.

AB News

The AB service is a separate service from the ECTE training programme and is responsible for monitoring and assessing the teachers during the two year statutory induction.
