Top benefits of NPQ courses! Why teachers and school leaders should enrol in 2026!

A National Professional Qualification (NPQ) is more than a qualification on your CV. It is an opportunity to develop leadership skills and strengthen professional confidence, enabling you to contribute more effectively to school improvement. As schools continue to evolve and new challenges emerge, ongoing professional learning and the ability to adapt are essential for teachers and school leaders who want to improve their practice and make a lasting impact on both their colleagues and pupils.

NPQ programmes are designed to inspire curiosity and continuous development through reflection.

What are NPQs?

NPQs are specialist and leadership programmes designed to support teachers and school leaders at different stages of their careers.

Specialist NPQs focus on promoting subject specialism and exploring a range of approaches to improve classroom teaching, while Leadership NPQs help develop stronger leadership capabilities, expertise and management skills to effectively lead and support others.

The Department for Education (DfE) has designed NPQs using the latest research evidence on effective practices in schools, ensuring that participants develop the knowledge and skills needed to improve outcomes for pupils.

Wandle Teaching School Hub NPQ courses are delivered in partnership with University College London (UCL), a world leading provider of teacher education and educational research.

Whether you are an aspiring leader, a teacher looking to deepen your expertise, or an experienced member of the senior leadership team preparing for the next stage of your career, an NPQ provides a structured and evidence-based framework for professional growth.

Here are some of the benefits an NPQ course can offer:

Create a positive impact

The benefits of undertaking an NPQ extend beyond the individual participant. Effective leadership creates positive school environments where teachers and other members of staff are supported, and pupils benefit from high-quality teaching.

By investing in their own development, teachers and school leaders contribute to building stronger teams, fostering a positive school culture, and driving sustainable school improvement. In turn, this supports better outcomes for children and young people.

Never stop learning

A commitment to learning, reflection and improvement remains at the heart of effective education. NPQs combine theory with practical application, enabling participants to reflect on their own experiences and use their new knowledge to address real challenges within their schools. Unlike purely academic qualifications, NPQs are designed to be immediately applicable. Throughout the programme, participants are encouraged to apply leadership strategies and evaluate their impact.

The programmes are grounded in current educational research, evidence-based pedagogy and recognised best practice, helping teachers and school leaders to make well-informed decisions and that can be applied directly within their school settings.  NPQs are not purely academic courses, they equip participants to interpret evidence critically and use it to address the challenges they face in their own school.

Develop your career

NPQs can be a valuable step in your professional learning journey. The knowledge and skills developed through the programme can increase your influence and effectiveness within your current position, as well as help you progress to a new role such as subject or phase leader, assistant deputy headteacher, or more senior positions.

Expand your professional network

Our participants have opportunities to share their experiences, discuss challenges and explore different approaches with their colleagues from a range of school settings during their face-to-face and online sessions.

They can also share their thoughts with other participants on the discussion forums available on the UCL Extend learning platform. Those professional interactions can provide ongoing support, inspiration and opportunities for collaboration long after the programme has ended.

Flexible learning

One of the major advantages of UCL’s NPQ programmes is their flexible blended learning model, which is designed for teachers and school leaders who are working full time.

Most of the core content of the programme is delivered through the UCL Extend learning platform, allowing participants to complete their reading, undertake self-directed studies, and watch videos at times that suit them best. All materials are online and can be downloaded or printed, and viewed on any device.

The programme is organised into modules and spread over 12 or 18 months, allowing participants to complete each module over the designated period rather than all at once.

Funding your NPQ

NPQ courses are available to both self-funded participants and those supported by their school.

If you are not eligible for DfE funding, self-funding gives you the opportunity to access a nationally recognised leadership qualification, and invest in your career progression.

Many schools choose to fund NPQs for their staff, recognising that motivated and skilled leaders create a positive impact across their organisation and improve staff retention.

DfE funding is available for eligible participants on selected NPQs in state-funded schools and educational settings. Eligibility criteria vary depending on the programme and your role, so please check the latest eligibility DfE guidance here.
